Registered Massage Therapy Modalities

Jan 11, 2021

In my practice, I, Mark Ellis, RMT offers many modalities to my treatment practice based on what is best for my clients needs.

These include:

Cupping
Cupping is a centuries-old modality that can greatly aid with tight muscles and fascia.  The therapist places plastic (or silicone) cups on your skin and creates a vacuum (either manually or with a hand-held pump) that draws up the skin, fascia and muscle underneath the cup.  The cup can either be stationary (the therapist leaves the cup in place) or moving (usually done with the silicone cup).  Both have benefits to a variety of musculoskeletal conditions, and can be a great alternative if you don’t like a deep tissue massage.  I use cupping extensively when I encounter large areas of restricted fascia, particularly hypertonic (overly tight/engaged) muscle, and trigger points that are being stubborn.  Cupping is an easy and safe treatment option.  All cups are thoroughly washed and disinfected between clients.

Bowen Technique
Bowen Technique is a simple yet profound massage technique.  As most of us have experienced, conventional massage typically addresses all the muscles of the body and if the therapist finds a tight or ‘problem area’, they will get to work massaging it out of you using various techniques.  While this type of massage is beneficial, the long standing therapeutic effects are sometimes not as long as we would like.  Bowen technique is more precise and allows the body ‘space’ to heal and integrate the massage on it’s own.  Bowen does not force the body to relax tight muscles so the body can be potentially more receptive to the treatment.

If you have suffered from a recent motor vehicle accident and/or are dealing with chronic pain, Bowen Technique might be a great fit for you.

Therapeutic Massage
This type of massage is used for treating specific problem areas you might have.  The massage techniques used can vary, but the aim is to reduce pain and tension in targeted muscle groups. Before your massage, it’s important to discuss your goals with the RMT so you know what to expect.  I specialize in deep tissue therapeutic massage, which is great for muscle soreness due to chronic injuries, work tension, postural dysfunction and more!

Intraoral Massage
Did you know that jaw pain or temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJD) can be treated by massage?  Intraoral massage means treatment of specific muscle groups of the jaw that are accessed inside the client’s mouth.  While this may sound a bit scary, the work is actually no more intrusive than a basic dental checkup.  The therapist wears gloves and communication about treatment techniques and client comfort are discussed beforehand.  In conjunction with conventional massage of the upper back, neck and shoulders, intraoral massage provides instant relief to most jaw pain.  I am fully certified to perform intraoral massage and will be receiving advanced certification in the spring of 2021.
