Physiotherapy

  • An initial assessment is required before performing treatment on an injury

  • A doctor's referral is not required to book in for an initial assessment but may be required to submit claims to your extended health care company

There are two options available when booking your initial Physiotherapy assessment:

  • Patients may choose to book a private assessment. We can get you in as soon as there is an availability on a therapists schedule (which can be as early as the same day). We offer direct billing to the following extended health companies; Alberta Blue Cross, Great West Life, Greenshield, Alberta School Employee Benefit Plan (ASEBP), Johnson Inc, Sunlife (excluding Public Service Plans), Standard Life, Chambers of Commerce, RCMP and Veteran Affairs.

  • As of March 1, 2022, Alberta Health Services has made Province-wide changes regarding funding for Physiotherapy Services. This affects all Albertans who access funded sessions for Physiotherapy. With the new model, the same access and funding rules will apply, no matter which area an individual resides in Alberta.

If you are wanting to book for an Alberta Health Services funded appointment for general joint, muscle conditions or injuries, you must call the Alberta Health Services Rehabilitation Advice Line at 1-833-379-0563 first.

If you have had a fracture or surgery, with the new model, you are still eligible for treatment as before, with a reduced number of total sessions covered.

If you have had a hip or knee replacement, you do not have to call the Rehabilitation Advice Line first. Your assessment will still be with one of our Physiotherapists. However, Alberta Health Services has modified the program to take place in the form of small group classes that will run at different times during the week at our Active Physio Works Servus Place (St. Albert), Active Physio Works Kensington (North Edmonton), and Active Physio Works Fort Saskatchewan Clinics.

What to Expect

On Your First Visit

Initially when you come in to the clinic, we will have you check in with our receptionists who will have forms for you to fill out consenting for your treatment before you see the Physiotherapist/Massage Therapist. We ask that you arrive a few minutes early for your appointment to provide time to complete this.

Your Physiotherapy Assessment will take approximately 45-60 minutes, in which the therapist will discuss your case history, the nature of the injury and any other relevant information. and contributing factors. Along with a physical evaluation of the affected area they will determine the cause of the injury and how best to treat you as effective and efficiently as possible. From there, they will determine a treatment plan that will best suit your needs and share this with you before beginning treatment that day.

On Follow Up Visits

Subsequent visits can range from approximately 45-60 minutes in length depending on your course of treatment. The session may involve various forms of treatment based on the individual’s needs.
