Could it be Carpal Tunnel?
Apr 30, 2015
Have you been noticing weakness or pain in your hands or wrists? Do your hands go numb? There is usually an assumption that with these symptoms, that you have carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel is defined as pressure on the median nerve as it travels through the wrist. It usually develops when there is not enough space for the nerve to travel through. Symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome include pain and weakness in the palm of the hand and/or wrists. There can be numbness in the hand or the thumb and first 2 fingers as well.
Carpal tunnel is commonly an over diagnosed problem. There can be many other things that can cause these symptoms. It can be pain referring from the neck, the shoulder and/or the elbow. If you have symptoms in both hands, that makes it even more likely that the pain is being referred from somewhere else (ie. the neck). There have been fewer and fewer carpal tunnel releases done by surgeons over the years. Why is this? Because if the pain is not actually caused by pressure on the nerve in the carpal tunnel, then surgery will not be successful. You will continue to have these symptoms even after surgery.
A physiotherapy assessment can help to determine if you actually have carpal tunnel syndrome or if your pain/numbness is coming from somewhere else. If it is carpal tunnel syndrome, physiotherapy can help as well. Call 780-458-8505 to book an assessment, today!
