Quick Tips for Your First Marathon

Jul 07, 2015

Attempting your first full marathon can be an anxiety inducing experience.  After completing my first marathon I acquired a few standout tidbits of knowledge and had wished were shared with me prior to my run. I felt I could have improved my time and my comfort level I’ll go through a few of those in this blog.

1. Know the Course Profile

Knowing when your major climbs and downhill’s are in the race will significantly influence your energy demands, hydration needs and mental preparation. Be sure to make mental note of your long uphill and take on some extra fluid and a gel pack at the hydration station prior! Don’t be scared to open up a little on the downhills to try and make up a bit of time.

2. Maintain your Energy Levels

If you’re unsure if you’ll need to use gel pack for energy along the way, the answer is yes. I made it about 17km before realizing this.  After hitting the wall I found it very difficult to get my energy levels up again. You would be best served to avoid getting into this predicament by using a gel pack every 6-9km or 30-45mins. GU Energy gel/tabs were popular on the course!

3. Keep Hydrated

I know, simple right? I thought so too.  Taking on 1-2 waters at each hydration station didn’t quite do it for me. By the third station at 21km I was feeling very dehydrated and took an extra few seconds to take back 6 waters (yes, 6).  I subsequently took 4-5 waters at the final 2 water stations trying to get my hydration up. Similar to the energy predicament, I found it tough get hydrated again once I lost it.  Long story short…take what you plan on drinking at the water stations and consider doubling it, especially in the first 21km. This will prevent dehydration later in the race as well as save you time and discomfort down the road! Another option is to run with a hydration belt and take drinks as needed!

I know these seem like simple fundamentals but it is very common to underestimate your body’s need for fuel in such metabolically demanding events, especially if it’s your first time. Good luck out there!
