Running Technique
Nov 30, 2010
For the longest time I was always concerned about wrecking my joints since I like to train in shoes that I was convinced did not have enough support or cushioning. Ever time I tried a high end cushioned shoe and lots of support I never felt smooth running in them. In the spring I took a course on the prevention of running injuries, and based on there research they are in support of minimalizing our footwear and allow the foot to move more natural. The course and their research seemed to shadow my own experiences with footwear and helped me understand why I felt better in a lighter shoe ( and less injury prone). I came across a good article in the november issue of Runners world on the latest research on this new trend. It gives some good advice and worth a quick read.
As a result of the course, it has led me to work on improving my efficiency in my running gait. I am doing this through beginning some barefoot training. Progress has been slow but I am comfortably running about 5k a week of my mileage barefoot. I feel it has really improved my strength and balance, and efficiency.
