Keeping It Cool
Sep 02, 2014
Despite improvements in road conditions, vehicle safety and driver education, most of us will be involved in a motor vehicle accident in our lifetime.
The stress from even a small fender bender can send most of us into a tailspin. The sound of shattering glass, screeching brakes and tires and the feeling of being out of control can affect our thought process at the scene of an accident. We know what information needs to be collected following an accident but during those moments will everything be remembered?
I have been involved in two accidents and both times I was not as prepared as I thought. The first accident I was driving and outside factors played a large part in how the accident transpired. Thankfully, another motorist who witnessed the accident, stopped and got the names of a group standing on the corner waiting to cross for witness purposes – something I would have never thought to do during that moment.
My second accident happened while I was parked. Another vehicle miss judged the size of the space beside me and hit the back of my vehicle. I was much calmer this time and we both knew exactly what information was needed. We pulled out our identification and pink cards to exchange information, the problem, neither of us had any paper in the car. I ended up writing her information on the back of a store receipt.
Of course we all hope an accident is not in our future but we can be somewhat prepared – what’s in your trunk? First aid kit, blanket, flashlight, flares? How about spare paper and a pen?
