Running Shoes

Looking to buy new running shoes and don't know where to start? Especially if you are new to the running world, and simply want to start a jogging program... where do you begin?
There are so many options when buying new runners, it is really hard to know what is the best choice or right shoe for you. Looking at shoes with torsion control, extra cushioning, extra heel support, pronation correction, barefoot technology, or any other marketing information that comes with the latest jogging shoes can be a daunting experience.
Minimalist running and walking shoes are growing in popularity in both competitive and recreational settings due to the emergence of recent evidence that suggests traditional "jogging" shoes may alter our natural gait pattern. This alteration may result in increased mechanical stress on our bodies, and, in turn, injury. However, if you choose to, and in order to safely transition from a traditional shoe to a minimalist shoe, it is advisable to do so slowly and speak to your Physical Therapist show you have any questions.
Here are a few basic tips if you're looking to purchase new shoes and want to take the more minimalist approach:
The Shoes
- Minimal drop in sole height from heel to the toe of the shoe
- Lightweight
- Flexibility along the length and the width of the shoe to promote natural motion
- Appropriate fit and wide toe box to minimize the formation of pressure points on the foot (comfort)
- Avoid motion control techniques (ie. pronation)
The Running Pattern
- Increase your running cadence to 170-180 steps/second
- Take light strides by focusing on decreasing the noise of each step
- Decrease the vertical displacement, or the bounce of the body, as if you were running under a low ceiling
At Active Physio Works, we can do a full assessment of your running stride and help you to determine any needs prior to beginning a running program.
