Core Strength?
Aug 27, 2015
Why do we train it? Why do we need it?
What athletes and runners should know?
Your always hear the buzz words "I need to work on my core!" But what exactly is the core and why do we need to work on it?
The core is not only about stomach muscles, but consists of the muscles of your back (erector spinae and multifidus), hip muscles: extensors (gluts) and rotators (piriformus etc) and stomach muscles (transversus, obliques and rectus abdominus).
Together these muscle make up your core and are the center of stability for your whole body. They work like your own built in stability belt.
Think of it like your personal engine block; if it's not functioning and working efficiently, the wheels (legs in our case) aren't going to keep rolling efficiently.
Problems down the kinetic chain with backs, hips, knees and ankles are often seen in athletes and runners. And sometimes an ineffective core may be one of the problems. So, the next time you forgo the core exercises after your run or workout ... think again?! Your whole body will thank you!
