GLA:D™ Knee Program
Nov 29, 2018
Do you have aching hips or knees? Have you stopped being physically active due to hip or knee pain? Do you believe exercise will make your knees or hips worse? Are you at a loss on how to manage your joint pain?
These are common things we hear in the health care industry and it is education that is needed to provide real answers to the above questions.
GLA:D™ (Good living arthritis developed in Denmark) is a relatively new initiative in Canada that is addressing these issues. It is an education and exercise based program for Osteoarthritis of the hips and knees. It is a guided neuromuscular exercise program offered in small groups and taught by a qualified physical therapist. The course starts with 2 very valuable education sessions to challenge the myths about osteoarthritis, pain and exercise. Following this, a 6 week program (2 exercise sessions per week) comprised of strength, core , function and positional awareness exercises is implemented.
The early outcomes and research from the program have been amazing. Early data in Canada in the last 3 years of implementation have shown:
- 28% reduction in pain intensity
- 35% of participants increased their physical activity
So, If you or anyone you know wants to do something about their aching hips or knees and doesn't know where to start, this just might be the place. Clients of any age, ability or pain levels are encouraged to join and see the benefits of proper guided exercise to improved function and quality of life!
